In the tidal wave of amazing funk and soul coming out of West Africa in the ’70s, The Funkees were among the ones that were picked up in the 2nd wave of afro-funk in the 2010s and re-released to the enjoyment of a new, hungry audience.
This compilation ranges from heavy funk to wild psychedelic rock tunes and shows the band’s range in full and is a great starting point for someone (like me) who is just starting to get into their music. On top of that, many of the songs in the compilation come from singles that were only released in Nigeria in the ’70s with no recent re-releases, so it would be a truly herculean task to even get a hold of the songs in the compilation on their own.
