Gerda - Believe in Gerda
2025-04-22
Gerda (aka. The Krauts) has committed a pretty great album in Believe in Gerda, at least musically and flow-wise. My German is not good enough that I can really grasp the nuances of the lyrics so I cannot comment much on them, but the delivery is pretty old-school in the sense “tried and true”, i.e. it’s a good thing. The beats are also drawing from the older schools and sometimes trespassing on trip-hop (also a good thing) and in conjunction with the lyrical delivery it lends itself to a very doomsday in the ’90s vibe at times (still a good thing). There’s even a guitar solo(!) in Up Im Smoke which is arguably also the oldest schoolest of the old school beats on the album.
I am aware that it may sound like I think the album is just old school with old school on top, but it is really more of a “good fundamentals” kind of thing where they may add a little contemporary flair here and there that betrays that it was in fact made in the 2020s. Check it out. Even if you do not speak or understand much German, it is definitely worth a listen.
